I'm putting a 350 engine from a 71 Monte into a 88 monte. The harmonic balancer & pully from the 88 is about 8" in diameter, The one from the 71 is only 6.5" in diameter. Does the size of the harmonic balancer have to be the same size as the pully? Or would it be OK to use the larger 88 pully with the smaller 71 harmonic balancer?

The only problem I see is the bolt pattern. The larger pulley may not fit the '71 damper. Resist the temtation to swap the damper. Leave the original damper on the engine and if necessary the smaller pulley and just buy "custom" belts. You did not sat if you were swaping PS, AC, and etc also. These componets may have different size pulleys too. You should be able to use the '88 accessories on the '71 engine or vise versa.

Yea, my plan was to swap everything over, except AC, the p/o already removed it. I'll check that bolt pattern tonight after work.
Thanks

I have an 86 Monte that i just did a V-6 to 305 engine swap.I was able to use all of the pully system from the 4.3 on the 305.99% of the chevy 90 degree V6 and V8 accessory bolt holes are identical.I was also able to use the 94 TBI heads with 1.6 ratio comp cams stamped steel intake rockers, a weiand X-Celerator pn#925-7546 intake manifold,a holley 600 cfm vac. secondary carb, summit shorty headers, and a crane blazer 2 cam pn#270-100072.this combo works excellent for good around town mileage, great highway mi. and awsome power from 3000 to 6500 rpm. granted your low end would not be so good but it is a very impressive mid to high range rpm band.especially for a 305.a 2500 stall converter will put an end to any take off problems.and yet still be a very reliable and driveable daily driver.

Well, I'm not too concerned about the car going real fast right now. It is my sons first car (he's 16) he bought for $500.00 with a bad motor. I had this 71 350 sittin around doin nothin, so I figured what the heck, might as well put it to use. So, we're workin on this project together (kinda like Paul sr. & Paul Jr.)it's all good though, I glad he's into these type of cars instead of the ricers.

well,if the car had a 4.3 v-6 or any of the chevy v-8 small blocks you would be able to switch the enitre pully system to your 71' small block.the most you would have to do would be to switch the timing cover to mate with the cars original 7 or 8 in. damper.that is if the cars crank pulley does not fit the 71' damper or the belts do not line up correctly.

Well, we went thru the entire motor & replaced all the gaskets & seals. Put a beautiful chevy orange paint job her, & all the swap over parts bolted up fine. Topped it off with a Eldebrock intake/600 CFM carb combo. Man, she sure looks purrty. Tomorrow she goes into the car, hopefully there won't be any problems.
