I am changing my lifters out and noticed that the pattern on the lobes are more towards the front of the lobes. When I removed the timing cover,I did notice that the thrust button was broken (nothing fell inside the motor) and I am thinking that's why the lobes look like that. It was to long and pushing back on the cam making the pattern like that. So would butting the right length button simply solve that problem or it's new cam time. The lobes aren't worn but the pattern on it is just not in the middle of the lobes like that should be. Just looking for answers.

if the lobes show no appreciable wear
Id just replace the cam button, and you should be ok

I am and this time ,I AM going to do it. The last time a let somebody else do it as I didn't have the time but I have the time now. It was the button that pushed it back. I had to shim the camshaft timing pulley to get the lobes to align back up correctly. Think for the info also. I am going to read up more about it just for my knowledge base.

The button can't push the cam back further than the gear sitting against the front of the block allows. Some people will say the button doesn't actually do anything since the distributor gear and associated oil pump load is constantly pulling the cam backwards.I tend to agree, it's nice for peace of mind to know the cam can't move, but the cam won't be moving anyways.
You putting shims in between the block and the gear is the only way to hold the cam forwards, which it sounds like you have done already.
