The Y2K Scare -25 YEARS AGO !!!
In the year 1999, computer programmers and users feared that their computers would stop working at the turn of the century. Everyone was being warned and told to shut down their machines so that their computers did not freak out when the clock changed to 12am on January 1st of 2000.

we had 3 shifts at the plant waiting for the stroke of midnight,
"Either all the valves will lock in place or go closed or nothing will happen"
the atmosphere was tense, luckily nothing happened,
the computer screen time clicked over to Jan. 1, 2000
5 minutes after midnight it was all laughs and jokes,
thankfully it was about 70° that night,
nothing worse than Ethylene Cracking plant shutdown in freezing weather,
those were the days

We rented out several backup generator sets, along with the mechanics to run them.

There were reasons it was perceived as hype, and a non-event.

LOTS of people working behind the scenes to fix issues before they could cause problems.

Who knows how much of it was just hype? I'm sure a lot of it was.

However, I know for a fact the utility company I was working at had tons of affected code that needed fixing or it could have been a big issue.

The one thing nobody really noticed (until later) at our place was our intranet home page that had a countdown to 1/1/2000, IT was coded improperly (non-Y2K related, just a code bug) and started displaying an incorrect countdown at least a few days ahead of the event. It was a non-issue as it was just a display for curiosity's sake; nobody (clearly) was depending on it as the official countdown, LOL

I remember when i was a kid 8 years old (1953 thereabouts). The word by the Jehovah Witness( not our family) that the world was going to come to an end. That was quite a thing for an 8 year old. We’re still here

I was browsing comic books at the corner store in the 60's.
I saw a magazine headline that read "Is God Dead"
I thought the world was going to end any second so,
I ran home as fast as I could.
Needless to say I had a lot of questions

It was traumatic. I'm still recovering. I thought I was going to get kicked off America-on-line. My life would have been in shambles.

A few months later I found an online support group. A small group of guys that liked to ramble on about all things Chevy. It saved my life.
