The PO of my '96 replaced the Bose Gold system with a nice Kenwood head and amp. But the speakers were either poor or blown so I replaced them. In comparison, the sound quality is far better now. However, when adding a little extra bass (not overboard, just 4 out of a possible 10 setting), the bass sounds a little "plastic-like" or hollow from the rear speakers. The PO installed his speakers in the original Bose housings, which are plastic and were completely hollow, and I installed the replacements in those housings as well. Would adding a little insulation inside those speaker boxes help with this? Thanks!!

Thanks for the reply; that's what I was thinking. Turns out that the Bose speaker boxes have tubes that allow sound from the back of the speaker enclosure to come out the speaker grille. (As seen on the left side of the attached pic.) I packed those tubes (about 1-3/4" in dia) with fiberglass and that really improved the sound quality. I still may add additional sound deadening inside the box but for now I'm far more satisfied with the sound quality as is.
