This is my 3rd tbi truck, and arguably the most gutless. I'm at my wits end to make it a tolerable driver.

186k. New fuel filter and fuel pump. New catalytic converter and 3" exhaust. Basic tune up stuff, plugs (Delco copper), wires, cap/rotor. Timing reset to 0-1 adv (Was 4 deg advanced).

A thought I had was a lack of total distributor timing... But seeing it's all ECM controlled (has a non-oem distributor in there from PO) so I'm not sure that can happen. Maybe my damper has slipped and not showing proper timing?

I am hoping to get a set of injectors rebuilt, but that's my only other option I can think of.

It has 4.10 gears and 285/75/15 tires. I know the cheap wheels are heavy but its still a lower gear than the 3.73s and stock tires. I can't even get the thing to bark the tires, even in the rain. Seems to pull ok in 1st or 2nd, but on the highway it's a total dog. Torque converter locks up properly, fluid looks fine.

Tell me what the heck I'm missing? New O2 sensor? MTC1 cam swap??

as i understand it you need to know fuel pressure.

It maintains 13 psi with the new pump

i would play with the timing a bit. also check to see if the cam has a bad lobe. did you do a compression or leak down test?

Yeah, I thought of a compression test the other day. I'll give that a shot and see where it falls.

If I bump up the timing is there a way for me to know if it's hitting the knock limit and retarding it?

Scanner with live data will show you knock counts and knock retard. Problem these days is finding one that is OBD1 compatible. Last one I used was a borrowed OTC Genisys.

In the limited experiments I did, even a couple degrees of advance was enough to cause knock counts and knock retard. I'm sure each engine can vary based on a number of criteria, though.

Yeah, that's why I've always stuck with 0-2. I don't see it getting much unless the damper has slipped. I guess I should verify that first visually between the rotor and timing mark.

I just don't understand this thing. I know its heavier than my previous pickups being a suburban, but it's even more gutless than my 91 when I sold it with all threes across the odometer and higher gears.
