Working on replacing my original weatherstripping. The roof rail weatherstrip, is it held on by glue ? Going to use Steele rubber for the front and rear windshield gaskets and I haven't read anything good about the other brands . I used OER for the doors and they fit perfectly. For the windshield gaskets . I will have a shop replace those . I know there are clips that hold the chrome trim on around the windows . Should I order new clips? Wondering if they break easily . thanks guys !

Never a bad idea to have a few various clips on hand if not needing a full set when doing a tear down. My local wesco autobody supply, think its a national store, has an array of fitting clips in stock so you don't have to wait for mail order when in a pinch.

yes the roofrail weatherstrip was glued into the stainless. 3M weatherstrip adhesive should be used. If you don't glue it the side windows can pull the weatherstrip out of the stainless.

Buy only the correct reveal moldling clips -they are different length and types sold (they hold the stainless trim in place) for the front and back glass (Cars Inc has the correct ones ) Not easy to save the original clips normally.

Paul,
which trying to figure out a couple of things on this subject.
1. The correct screws for the trim that goes up the front A-pillar, across the top under the roof rails and down the back sail panel that holds the door/window seal. I think this is them (pic 1), but I am 2 short and want to make sure I have the correct screws.
2. Correct sealant to go between the stainless and the body. The old stuff seems like seam sealer that is in all the nooks and crannies and stays soft forever. Seems to me that a silicone based exterior sealant that stays flexible might be superior (like pic 2), but you guys are much more experienced that I so I defer to your expertise.
Thanks much,
Scott

While cleaning these pieces up and refurbishing them I also noticed that there was tape on the top between the trim piece and the body where there sealant was. What is up with that?

Scott,
Those are the factory correct screws for 61 to 64 Chevy hardtop roof rail stainless.
(I have extras..)

The correct weatherstrip adhesive is this black 3M Super Weatherstrip adhesive. The one you showed is not correct -not even close...

https://www.eastwood.com/3m-super-weatherstrip -gas...

Yes the 61-64 stainless roofrail had a cloth type tape ....plus... a wide rubber seal the width of the top of the stainless about 1/16 inch thick between the body and and the stainless..
I saved the rubber seal and reused or found some to replace it (no 3M sealer on top of the stainless -its used to hold the roofrail weatherstrip in place.

The 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive that I posted above (# 08008) is also used on door weatherstrip at the ends and other place on door weatherstrip as needed and trunk lid weatherstrip in the U shaped area on the trunk opening for the weatherstrip.

I found the 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (# 08008) at my local parts store - either Advance Auto or OReillys Auto Parts.

This weatherstrip goes on easy and is a reasonable match to the black color of the weatherstrip

I have used it on at least 8 frame off restorations

I used that 3M adhesive on the trunk weather stripping and the lower door weather stripping to hold it to the body. The one I posted the picture of is something I used at home for outdoor and other applications. It seems to never harden and work well thru wet and dry as well as temperature fluctuations so I figured if I couldn't identify what had been used I thought maybe it might be an option.
Anyway, the wide rubber seal is interesting; there was no evidence of a rubber seal, just what looked like a ¼” diameter rolled bead of what looked like the seam sealer on the top.
I have the replacement weatherstripping that goes between the bottom of the stainless and the door/windows. Trying to find a part number for the sealer between the stainless and the body. Is there supposed to be a gap between the front (short) piece and the long (rear) piece (photo)? I've been digging around what I have for something that fits in the gap.
Appreciate the help. Thanks again,
Scott

63 & 64 Hardtops had a small piece of stainless shaped to fit ( a small curved piece) between the roofrail stainless by the vent window and long roofrail over the door and rear 1/4 window

61 & 62 roofrail stainless did not have the small connector piece of stainless - they were made to connect by the vent window stainless sliding over the longer roofrail stainless

3M strip caulk can be used on top of the stainless next to the painted roof

Here are the 63-64 roofrail trim connector pieces a little expensive

Funny I was looking at those and these last night. I haven't been able to find anything similar anywhere, no repop parts which I thought was strange.

These say 4-door, but they actually looked like the right piece where the others looked like they might belong to something else. Like we talked about, a bit of experience goes a long way.

I wouldn't use the 3M strip caulk because it isn't like what used to be sold. The new caulk will seal, but once in place you can never get it to release its bond. I have had better luck with SEM caulking in a caulking gun cartridge. I don't know what colors are still available. It is pricey, but worth the money.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
