Hello,

I'm in the UK and new to this but I've seen a '53 6100 truck that was imported and registered here five years ago. Body and chassis are in good order and it appears to have original engine and power train. Gears work fine and it runs and drives well enough. (The only gauge working is oil pressure and that seems fine.)

I've done small scale mechanical work but I'm not confident about identifying issues so any advice on the following would be gratefully received.

There was some noise when the clutch was depressed; not that loud but obvious. I assume this is the thrust bearing. Does the noise mean it's going to collapse soon or could it last for ages, if that's not an impossible question to answer? I guess changing it would require the engine to come out. Is it a dry clutch that can it be greased and is that likely to help?

Engine oil looked clean and it started and ran well - no tappet or obvious mechanical noises but a little smoke came from the oil filter cap when I took it off, after the test drive. It was a hot day but the engine didn't seem too hot so I wondered if this was from blow-by or just normal oil fumes, that old engines produce, in the absence of crankcase recirculation. Would a compression test be helpful to get an idea of the condition of the top end or maybe I should just expect an unrestored engine to have some blow by?

Thanks in advance.

welcome to ct. wiring is probly not in good condition. brake hydraulics may not be so good either. best to get a real mechanic to go over it with you. you need to look for blowby with the engine running. also , is there coolant in it or water? water means rust. overall condition means allot. does it look like its been well teken care of or just sitting in a corner?

Thanks for the tips. It runs well and brakes are strong, in fact but of course, that doesn't mean its got all new pipework and no leaks. So yes, if I go for it, that'll need checking. But generally, it looks like it's had quite a bit of decent work done on it.

to me the condition of the body and frame are top priorites. everything else can be replaced or rebuilt not needing the finesse of a skilled bodyman or welder/fabricator. but thats me.

Thought I'd update you all. I bought the truck! Took me a month to decide and I have to lengthen my garage but it'll be great. Mainly I wanted to post a pic but I can't seem to do it.
But maybe this link will work.

Thanks for all the advice.

looks good. another thing to look for is the age of the tires. im guessing they are very old. the dot date code will show the age.

Yes I'm happy with it. I'll run her gently and slowly improve things. Apart from the truck bed, she seems very original. Tyres are quite new, I think.

i would inspect and change driveline fluids and brake fluid, even steering gear fluid. also pay particular attention to brake lines and hoses.
