My son just inherited his great grandfather's 74 vega gt it started just fine a day ago. When I went to start it today it wouldn't idle at all only would run when keeping on the gas peddle. 2nd try after it shut off from trying to let it idel I started the car took my foot off the gas the rpm dropped to 1k then all of a sudden shot up to 6k and then shut off smoke was comming from the wire harness just behind the brake booster. Now the battery is dead. Any ideas what would cause this

Also this car has a 355 sbc with a 350 trans holley 4 barrel double pumper with electric choke after it stalled I took the air cleaner off and the butterfly valve was wide open on a cold motor.
