Does anyone know of any documents showing where and how to fill the air conditioning system on the 76 Impala? I managed to find a refill kit at a local hardware store and I figure it can't hurt to try. But I don't see any references in my manuals.

you need to have a set of gauges and a vacuum pump. might be able to rent them.

Just for some extra info, if you bought a kit at your local store, it can't be R-12 which is what your car calls for, unless it did get converted over to the newer 134-A.

Thisi is what I bought. It's said to be suitable for topping up R12 systems safely.

I'm far from an AC expert, but I would not trust or use that product. Some of us still have some R-12 around and some old time garages still have some available. I would recommend to look for a local garage and have them professionally re-charge it.

I did it on my 66 impala : it' s easy but first you need to have a vacuum pump ( you have to discharge all the system) . Then you connect your system on low side , engine running , AC running and full open .
At last open the can , and look the pressure : when OK , stop it !
