Username Post: from a slight "charge' to "discharge" ? what's with this/        (Topic#375309)

My stock '49 Chev 216 always showed a slight + on the amp gauge. Now it's a slight discharge, even at fast idle. Then when the head lights are turned on it's a MAJOR discharge. Checked the non-adjustable voltage regulator for contact point gap/cleanliness. Time to rebuild the generator? The generator has been untouched since '97. Battery is a couple years old, stored in winter, and cranks fine....but this draw is taking its toll. Any thoughts?

To check generator output, momentarily ground the field terminal on the generator, engine at 1,500 rpms your volt meter on the battery terminals would be around 7.8-8.0 volts,this eliminates the regulator also. Post back results.

You might need to flash the generator as it may have lost its residual magnetism. I had to do this on my 35 ford. It got it charging again

Here is a link on how to do it. It is for a 12 volt system. Works the same just use your 6 volt battery tor/

polarizing the voltage regulator is the same as flashing and all you need is a paperclip or a short piece of wire

I took Shepherd's suggestion. At 1500 rpm I disconnected the FLD connector from the voltage regulator and grounded it. Battery voltage reading was 6.02 volts, which tells me Mr. Generator isn't doing his job.
Haven't tried "flashing" yet.
Battery has been slowly discharging the past couple weeks. Turning on the headlights pegs the amp gage on the discharge side. Regulator points are clean and gapped, no corrosion or broken windings. Connections are clean, tight and not broken. Belt is not loose. Generator has not been serviced since at least 1997 when I "rescued" my Fleetline.
Any additional thoughts before generator goes to surgery?
