My old '95 Jimmy is back. My friend not waiting for me hired a shade tree mechanic. He was chasing a crank no start condition. His solution, change the distributor. Well, it didn't start. When I go check it, the distributor base is completely loose. He didn't have the wrench to tighten it down. Or gave up. First, I fixed the no spark condition. The coil and wires now have spark. When I have free time, I'm going out to reset the timing. The distributor does turn. Wiring order looked correct. I didn't have my fuel pressure tester but I'll check it. I hear the fuel pump running. The Jimmy had a new CPI spider installed shortly I bought it. It should still be good. How forgiving is timing on CPI? The crank bolt felt like a 17mm. Does anyone know the size?

Gchemist,
I don't know the answer but 17mm sounds like the thread diameter and not the head size but I'm assuming you were asking about the socket size to use...
If it's the 4.3L wasn't that based on the old Chevy SB? If so I doubt they deviated from English sizes on something with the roots it has...but I've been wrong before ![](/fusionbb/images/smilies/smile1.gif)
BTW: I haven't been in this part of the forum for a while so glad to see you're still holding down the fort.

Scott,
Yes, it uses the old bent style HEI wrench. Luckily, I still have mine for my C10. 1/2" and 9/16" sizes. The fuel pump was bad. A new one is installed. However, the installation is incomplete. I've been waiting on two vent valves. The Jimmy will be started up this week.

Reached way back into my tool shelves on Saturday. Jimmy timing was way off. The shade tree mechanic that swapped a distributor left it loose. I moved the distributor to an approximate location. The tank needed two vent valves to complete installation. The Jimmy started right up. Idle was not steady. The timing wire was easy to reach. It was right under the glove box door. I remembered to plug in the wire after setting timing to 0 degrees. The harmonic balancer was marked with TDC. After a few tries, it was set to TDC. The new owner is ready to drive home. The chain is probably stretched a bit. If idle issues show up once it's hot for a while, I can add 1-3 degrees of timing.

Great work. I didn't know that there's even a timing wire for these.

Yup, CPI and TBI both have a timing wire that needs to be disconnected for TDC. The Jimmy wire was almost reachable to unplug. It was not long enough. I had to remove the lower plastic panel to have enough room to reach the connector.
