What is the rpo code for a 1972 EL CAMINO SS

L65 165 hp Turbo-Fire 350 Engine
LS3 240 hp Turbo-Fire 402 Engine (SS396)
LS5 270 hp Turbo-Jet 454 Engine (SS454)
Contrary to hype, the 307 engine WAS NOT available with SS equipment. That required an optional engine which the 307 was not, it was the base V8 that came standard.
My new 1972 El Camino SS350 with dealer installed Chevy accessory flame decal pkg.
Tan Bucket Seats, column shift, PS, PB, tinted glass, vinyl roof cover, midnight bronze and AM radio.

factory correct ?

That can be difficult w/o original documentation as SS pkg was just as option, not a model. Do you have an documentation such as the warranty booklet that has a metal plate attached?
First of all it would have to be one of the optional engines I mentioned and those are coded in the VIN, 5th digit is engine code for 1972.
J - RPO L48 350-4BBL
U - RPO LS3 402-4BBL
W - RPO LS5 454-4BBL<If it codes to this engine it has to be an SS because the 454 was only available if the SS option was ordered. The other 2 engines did not require the SS option but could be ordered at extra cost.
First 4 digits of VIN should be;
1D80 - Chevrolet El Camino Custom V8

Does the dash have round or rectangular gage design? Round is not a 100% guarantee that it is an SS if it has a tachometer, but if rectangular it is 100% guarantee that it is NOT. That's because the tachometer gage package was NOT part of the SS package and could have been ordered without the SS package.

Fwiw The round pod style dash was stardard SS equipment with warning light (not gauges). Gauges w/tach WERE NOT included with SS option! That was a separate option available on any Malibu V8 or Custom El Camino V8. My '72 SS (pictured) did not have gauges w/tach, it had the round pod dash with warning lights instead of gauges and no tachometer.
Besides the '72 pictured, I also owned a 1970 Chevelle Malibu SS454 LS5 (ordered new) and later (1985) I had a well used 1970 El Camino SS396. None of them had the gauge option.

No ne info above. BTW I previously owned a '72 SS without the gages package but was a BB 4spd, CI, and SPECIAL PAINT. Also a '72 non SS optioned 4-spd AC, EC with every option other than SS package, down to NK4 steering wheel, deluxe seal belts (chrome) and color coded belts, that was also Midnight Bronze and it included the Tachometer package, no exterior decal package.

Strange, but I ordered a new elcamino 1972 and I ordered the midnight bronze with the same colored vinyl top. I ordered the 402/automatic in mine. The gauge package was offered to me for just over 100.00 and I turned it down, so it was offered as an option. I remember paying 3800.00 out the door for mine. Traded it in 2 years later on a new motorhome.

As I was told, it was destined to be a salesman demo but I happened in before it was ever driven, it was not on the lot. I wanted an SS Chevelle but no dealer in the Grand Rapids, MI area had any, this was the only SS choice.
