All factory wired impalas have two wires for brake lights, turn signal and taillights to 4 of the 6 tailghts. The 2 center taillights of each group of 3 lights are backup lights with only one wire.
Just buy a factory original wiring harness ( there are 3 harnesses ) from American Autowire . The factory wiring harnesses come with the correct factory sockets to plug into the aluminum tailight housings.

The trunk light harness( for 4 lights) is a separate factory harness that plugs into the harness from the dash next to the drivers side trunk hinge and has 4 factory sockets on the harness( two back up one wire and 2 - 2 wire sockets).

Paul,
Were back up lights standard on the Impala?
I ask because I had a 63 Impala (not SS) that I bought in '68. It was a 3 on the tree manual and I do not remember it having back up lights . As I remember, the center 'light' (of the trio of lights) was simply a reflector (my memory may be faulty).
The '63 Impala (not SS) that I bought in 2012 (a 4 speed manual) also did not have back up lights (at least not functioning ones).
Just a question.

I recall that all the impalas I restored ( 8 of them)had a single green wire to each backup light.
Not 100 % sure that all impalas had back up lights.
I have seen lots of back up GM NOS light conversions, I think most of them were for Belair and Biscayne cars.

Back up lamps were standard on all Impala models in 62/63. Back up lamps were also included in the comfort and convenience package fitted at the factory and they were also a separate dealer fitted option and you regularly see the small box full of all the bits for sale on Feebay.
Cheers, Carl.
