Unfortunately, my 2500HD sits outside. Occasionally after a wet snow, rain, and freezing temps, the electric folding mirrors freeze in the folded in position. Once it warms up outside the mirrors operate as they should. I'd leave them extended, but they're in the way when parked in the driveway.

Any solutions out there? Thanks!

Maybe a blow dryer or heat gun until they open? Then close them and drive out, then open them again?
Just a thought.

Is it hard to just manually fold them by hand?

Just bought a 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT and negotiated $9k off MSRP. I brag about it every chance I get!

Thanks, I have thought about a blow dryer or a heat gun. I'm not familiar with the internal workings of the mirrors. Likely some gear set-up. I don't want to force something and break it.

It's clear that moisture is the problem during freezing temps. Where could I find a parts diagram for the mirrors. Maybe a silicone based grease to keep moisture out of the gears?

Can't you spray some water displacing liquid where the mirrors pivot? Thats what I would do and this is what I would use, It contains no silicone, and is compatible with plastic, leather, fabric,
fishing line and paint.--------->MP Metal Protector

Well, that seems like a good idea. I'll have to look into that product. The other thing I saw on YouTube, was a guy using WD-40 with silicone; however, his mirrors were dragging and not freezing due to moisture. He used a quick spray in the lower pivot on the mirrors and it made a noticeable improvement in the operation of them.

Does anyone know what the gears are made of in these mirrors(plastic, nylon, metal)? I'd feel better knowing that before I spray anything in the pivots.

Thanks,

HandyAndy

Everything is made of plastic. I seen a busted up one.

Thanks Mike,

That's the info I was looking for, plastic gears. I'll see if I can locate the Amsoil Metal Protector locally. Maybe treating the mirrors in the Fall would keep them operable during the Winter months.

Thanks again,

HandyAndy

Even being preemptive, they still may freeze up as cold weather is unpredictable on moving parts.

I understand and I think doing something like you've recommended with a water displacement lubrication just makes sense.

Another thought I had was to try and put a rubber sleeve or boot over the pivoting joint on the mirrors. I'm not sure how they would fit over the mirrors, but something like that may help keep moisture out of the pivot too. Any thoughts?
