HI all. This may have been covered in another post, but I couldn't find it with the search function.
My temp gauge always reads high, almost to the "H" but the engine temp never gets over 180* according to my IR temp gun. I had the temp indicator refurbished and have tried 3 different sender units -all read high but some worse than others. I even sprung for the expensive AC/Delco unit, and it buried the needle into the "H" at normal operating temp. Seems that others have had this issue with the Tri-5's and it was a matter of finding the correct sensor. Has anyone experimented with adding an inline resistor to the sender wire to increase the resistance ? BTW I have a new Weiand manifold so no paint or rust in the hole, and no Teflon tape or thread sealer either. New wire and clip connector, too. I should mention it does read at "C" when the engine is cold.

Thanks, Bobb. I had thought about that but wanted the simplicity of just soldering in an in-line resistor and taping it up, rather that figuring out where to mount the pot. So, I ordered 2 x 30 Ohm resistors and I'll play with them next week and keep you posted!
HI all. Update/Proof of concept 1/9/24: I soldered a 25W 30 Ohm resistor in line and it works! At operating temp (~ 175*) the temp indicator sits right in the middle! Haven't done any road tests yet (raining all day) so we'll see how it does later in the week but so far, so good. Thanks for all the advice. Just need to clean up the wiring a bit and should be good to go!

i would block off the radiator and run the temp up to verify the upper end of the scale.

Thanks! I'll try it. Easy to do but I tried something a lot more difficult. See my cross post here over on Impalas.net

i like to add idiot lights cause things can go wrong real fast with a leak. the led lights nowadays are very bright. i recently installed oil pressure, coolant temp, and alternator lights. the indash lights are very difficult to replace in my truck and i dont care about originalness. looks like you got it good. congrats.
