I want to do a compression test after I put my cylinder head back on. Is it necessary to have the intake manifold installed? I have a oil printer rod that I used at one time with a drill. I plan on running the pump around 5 minutes before I do the test.then another 5 minutes before I do the second head. Think that will work?

I've never done it but I think it will work, as long as the valves are operational.

Yes you can do a compression test like that, as mentioned. But, 5 minutes priming is unnessary, maybe 2 minutes after pressure is achieved. Important to turn the engine 180 from tdc to get to all bearings.

How about using a piece of pvc pipe as a spacer that would closely duplicate the intake manifold's thickness and hole diameter? Then the distributor would run the oil pump while doing the compression test. You may need something to run the length of the block to support the piece of pvc.
