Hey guys, I have a 327 with the old style "double hump" heads that were redone, valves, guides etc. I have one rocker that slides off the valve stem and the push rod was bent. Changed the rocker and push rod then drove it and checked it again. It was still slipping off the valve stem. My question is two fold. 1. What's the probable cause and 2. Is self aligning rockers a possible fix? I say possible fix because I was told they can interfere with the valve retainers. Hard to believe since so many are used. Also, the stud looks straight. Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks bobb for responding. I've driven it since this happened and it ran fine (after replacing the pushrod) but when I checked the rocker again it had slipped slightly sideways again. No apparent damage to the valve except for a little burring on the stem.

Did you replace the ball as well? Is the rocker stud bent?

Yes I replaced the ball also turbo. Now I'm measuring and looking at the stud. I can't tell for sure visually if it's bent but I did see a scratched area on the side of the stud. Do you think self aligning rockers will solve it? Anything short of pulling the stud I'm willing to try.

The stock ball and rocker is self aligning to some degree so I'm not sure what you are referring to.
I would check if your valve stem is bent. Also, you stated the rocker stud is straight, but are they all the same height? I've had stock studs pull loose on my old 327 solid lifter engine.

the hole in the head that the pushrod goes through acts as a guideplate. if the valve tip is not flat it can screw up the alignment.

Swap the rocker and ball to a different location and see if the problem follows.

Yep I swapped rockers and test drove it. I pulled the valve cover and the rocker had started to move already. Thanks for your input. I actually decided to pull the head and take it to a shop. Frustrating but I didn't want to just band aid it. Thanks all for your input!
