HI all: I posted this in the 1965-66 Forum as part of an ethanol discussion but thought maybe this forum would be more appropriate. Thanks!

This is a little off topic, but since we have several ethanol experts here, I thought I would ask...
What happens to a perfectly tuned engine when you switch from non-ethanol 89 to 10% Ethanol 89? Does it run cooler? leaner? More power or less? Less likely to detonate? No detectable change?
I ask because I have always run non-ethanol 89 in my '65 Impala to preserve fuel line components but I just realized that I have now replaced everything with new so there are no 60-year-old components left that might suffer from the ethanol added. At 12 MPG, the ethanol stuff would save me about US$ 0.40 a gallon.

Well, typically in a carbed engine fuel economy drops about 4%. Theoretically you would need slightly richer jetting, but I run it and it performs ok. Again, it produces less energy, so some power loss will occur, most likely not noticeable under most driving conditions. No difference in engine temps in my set up.

I don't know all the impacts, but a decrease in mpg (~10%) with the E10 was all I noticed back when the 'change' was mandated.

Thanks for the feedback on this (and all the other topics I've asked about!)
Would you expect the E10 to run leaner since the fuel is now oxygenated? I have my Impala tuned OK. Power and drivability are great but still runs a bit rich. I thought maybe the switch to E10 would maybe clean up the tailpipe as well as save me a few pennies...

The e10 is not the answer to carb tuning issues as you describe.

I have been using E10 for over 10 years because it is much cheaper than non ethanol. I add Stabil Marine Formula to every tank. No issues accept for about 10% less miles per gallon.
