My dad and I have a 67 Chevy truck (2WD, shortbed, 283, Powerglide automatic trans) and he wants to put his 409 in it and convert it to a manual transmission (preferably a Muncie four-speed). Has anyone out there gone this route before? What trans should he use to get the shifter in the stock location? He is a retired Chevy mechanic and has rebuilt many Muncie 4-speeds during his career. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Had a 348 in my 64. Exhaust hit motor mount perches and firewall had to be massaged for exh manifolds or the heads can’t remember. I know this is different but might have same issues?

Jeff, thanks for your reply. Did you stick with the stock exhaust manifolds or switch to regular headers or shortie headers to make it work?

I just nicked the perches with a torch. They hit the raised portion right behind the mount if I remember right. These were with factory 64 mounts. Might be better if you swapped xmembers and use 73-80’s style mounts?
Thought I was the only one to put a W in a 64.

Jeff, thanks for getting back to me. Nope, you're not the only one...my dad did this years ago with a 409. He was building a 36 Ford street rod (it was before I was born so probably late 60's or early 70's) and ended up selling the car but keeping the engine. So he bought a short bed 64, installed the 409 and that was his daily driver that he drove to work everyday. I wish my daily driver was that cool!

I had the complete engine out of my dads 64 Impala SS.. It was a 409/425 complete from air cleaner to pan, cast iron headers too. It was a QB block. It was our family car when I was a kid. Dad took out the W and put a 327 in.
I had it set in my 72 SS Nova but life got in the way and ended up selling it. That was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Always had a soft spot for the W!
