I have a 56 BelAir. I want to improve the steering so it’s not so hard. It’s stock now with a stock front end.

I think rack and pinion might be too much for me to tackle.
I’ve heard a method where the gear box can get changed to a different ratio.

My goal is to replace the stock steering wheel with a 15” diameter

First a smaller wheel will increase steering effort, without p/s. You can retrofit a firm feel different ratio steering box, available from several companies. Or retrofit a power assist system.

Tell me about power assist and and the gearbox option?

I don’t want to add a power steering pump

Maybe electric assist is the way to go. It works well on my 2016 Arctic Cat UTV

I found this electric conversion. I’m not sure if this is the power assist referenced in the thread.

You will need an alternator with 80-100 amp out put, depending on what other components you have in the car.

I would suggest that you find out what sort of guarantee goes with a system like this. The Chevy HHR and others are using an ESP system, but they be real nightmare to repair problems with them.

The electric power steering systems I have looked at so not change the ratio only provide assist. I would want a quicker ratio with power assist.

There are several quick ratio boxes, the aftermarket electric pump can mate to these. Without assist they require more steering effort though.

I located a power steering box that will work with a stock steering column without modifications to the column. Too bad this website won’t let me upload a picture from my iPhone 13.

If I go the route of a pump, can someone send me a link to a pump with a reservoir? I have a 327 small block in my car. I’ll need to find a bracket too

You have bad information. No way a stock steering column works unless you modify it by shortening it.
