Anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing my 1954 235 (in a 1950 styleline) to have a ticking sound coming from the timing chain area?
I thought it was the water pump but yesterday I got a pvc pipe (no stethoscope available) and placed it in different spots around where I thought the ticking sound was coming from. Engine was rebuilt less than a 1,000 miles ago. Changed the oil back in march.

Is there any way that you could post a video of the sound?
No timing chain. The cam and crank each have gears which mesh together. The original cam gear on cars was fiber. Trucks used aluminum. The aluminum gear is interchangeable with fiber gear.

Hydraulic lifters? Ticks are common knocks are not. Is it a consistent tick or knock or is it intermittent?

I had a 41 Cadillac that would start ticking, it was a lifter. The fix was a heavier weight oil or additive.

So I removed 1 quart of oil and added 1 quart of Lucas Heavy Duty oil stabilizer hoping it would help. No Luck. Still making the ticking sound up front behind the main pulley. I dont see an option to upload video with sound

I am no expert, but that sounds like a rocker arm hitting something besides the valve. Have you pulled the rocker arm cover and looked at the rocker arms?

Take the belt off and see if it still ticks.

Initially I thought it was my water pump also. But when I use a pvc pipe or rubber hose as a stethoscope the noise seems to be coming from the cover behind the main pulley. I tried listing to the valve cover, water pump, fuel pump and cover behind the main pulley. That was the only place I could hear the ticking.

I don't think that is a valve train noise, to be sure the valve cover should come off as suggested. Possible timing gear noise is on the table.

I know you are a mechanic with a lot of experience. Weren't the original timing gears fiber?

Pretty sure they were fiber, but by now they may have been replaced.

Is it possible that one of the fan blades is slightly bent and hitting the radiator.

So I found out where the clanking noise is coming from. Looks like the rivets that attach the fan belt pulley to the harmonic balancer are loose.
I might have found a friend with a extra harmonic balancer. Will find out later today. Doesn't look like anyone makes new ones so hopefully is is in good shape.

Can someone confirm that a 1954 235 engine Harmonic Balancer would have come with a pulley for thin 3/8" or thick 5/8" fan belt. Thank you

The 54 should have the narrow belt, 53 was the first narrow belt, probably because the power steering equipped cars had a double grove harmonic balancer.

That's strange because my engine is a 1954 235 and it has a wide belt. Maybe someone changed it in the past.

I've got a 235 from a '54 ready for my '53 and it has the narrow pulley.

Over the years owners and their mechanics made many unorthodox changes to keep our old cars on the road.

So will it be ok if I replace my harmonic balancer with this other one? I've cleaned it up an getting ready for a mechanic to install next week. You can see they have differences.
Sending pics next

The reason I want to use this one is because all the others I have come across have a thin belt pulley were mine has a thick 5/8" belt. Which matches my water pump and alternator.
