The spare tire on my 2014 Yukon is leaking badly. I check my spares from time to time to make sure they are viable in case needed. And it has held good air pressure until just this month. When I checked it this time it was at or near atmospheric pressure. I refilled it to 38 psi and put a different valve stem cap on it. Two days later I checked again and it was down to 30 psi. I took it down, refilled it to 38 psi and used water to look for leaks. There are multiple tiny bubble streams coming from between the tire and the inside rim. I guess it is rusty or something.

I’ll be taking to a tire store Tuesday to have them break it down and clean the rim to fix the leak.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Any tire may leak from around the rim if it has been on there as long as yours has (2014). In fact, you may have to take it to a garage to have it fixed. I was told by the manager of a major tire store that they will not put a tire that is over 7 years old on a rim.

Yes, common problem especially in rust belt states and with a spare that is located under the vehicle. Moisture causes corrosion on the bead of rim and tire. Often it can be cleaned and problem solved. But if the rim is badly corroded (pitted) than replacement is necessary.

When you break it down if there is any rust it needs to be taken down to bare metal and painted.

Tire stores also have a bead sealant they can apply after any corrosion is fixed.

I took it to Discount Tire where I trade regularly and they remounted and balanced it for nothing and that fixed it. Nice people, cant say enough about their good service.

lol, i just did one yesterday. for those of you who have aluminum spares under your truck i would suggest slathering some rust preventive on the rim to tire groove to prevent this. corrosion not only ruins the rim. you have a flat spare. ive been using fluid film with pretty good results on rust and corrosion.
