It’s why slave cylinders were invented. Breaking parts was common with a hard pedal clutch.
Did you use a new clip?

I put the clip back in might not have seated fully? It popped out again and 2nd time I made sure it was seated. Will see if it stays.
Are the clips sold separate from the cylinders, or will I have to match one up?
It may be part of the push rod assy?
How can I post a scan of the page in the service manual?
I have no idea why it popped out.

Has not popped out again.
When this first happened, it was raining and foot slipped off pedal a few times getting into gear.
I think the going from tne floor to back up popped out the clip. Last timè foot slpped is when clip popped out

Is the clip similar to the brake pedal clip? The brake clip lock has to lock on the rod grove. If it does not, it will pop out. I've received calls to help remove those clips. I use a small flat head screwdriver.

I've located the problem,....... after the master cylinder pushrod popping out a few more times........I've gotten good at putting it back in. I've used a small flat blade screwdriver to get the circlip back in, make sure it is fully seated. You'll also need a good light to see in there
I never would have found this without the truck service manual. I have a 1986 version. > 1500 pages......took a while to find this.
On page 7C-5 there is a diagram of the hydraulic clutch pedal assy. The parts are listed in figure 1. Part #111 is a rubber bumper, that mounts above the pedal on a metal support plate, that restricts the clutch pedal travel on return. I never would have looked for this as the problem without the service manual.
If it is damaged or missing, if your foot slips off the clutch pedal it will return and yank on the master cylinder pushrod. Part is discontinued, chevy # 12338127 I'm looking for a source, may have to fabricate one.
I assume this may be on many cars/trucks with hydraulic clutch systems. So if the pushrod pops out, check this.

I may have to eat crow on this one.
When I found the parts diagram , it was pouring rain yesterday. The diagram looks like the bumper is for pedal return.
I just got my face up under there better today, and it appears the bumper is for when you push the pedal down. And the bumper is much smaller than mentioned in several online sources (4" X 4"). It's more like 1.5" X 1.5".
Seems the clip popping out is still a mystery. I'll look better again later. I have to put the dust seal back over the pushrod/master cylinder which is almost as much of a PITA as getting the clip in. Last time it popped out it was raining and I had to get home, seal was not a priority.
I've got to work on a tractor this afternoon.
