Front axle seal,
I have a 1992 S-10 pickup,fwd,4,3 engine that the seal on front axle is leakng. I have the axle out.
the axle has a large flange on inner part(about 5.5
in. with six bolts). The seal is behind the flange that the inner part of axle bolts to. How do you get the part off to get to the seal? I have tried slide hammer but don't want to keep trying without knowing for sure.
Thanks

RWalker

From your description, I assume you mean the left side bearing. Is the flange removed? A diagram shows it off to reach the seal.

Thanks for the reply. The flange (#29) in diagram needs to come out to get to the seal that's located in #28. The seal is leaking. I am not sure how to remove the flange (#29) to get to seal. I have tried a slide hammer to remove flange, but wanted to be sure that is way to remove it.
Thanks again,
RWalker

Is it bolted on? The picture shows possible holes? Can you post a picture? Or email me one to post for you? I'll dig around to find a picture.

A few manuals were found here.

The holes in the flange(#29) are where the inner end of the axle bots. There are no bolts that hold the flange on,it has an internal c-clip that holds it in. You have to use a slide hammer to get it out. I was trying to remove it with a slide hammer but I was putting to much force on it. I tried it again with medium force and it came out. Installed seal and reinstalled flange which is the axle part that goes into the transmission. You line up the splines and tap it and it goes in and the c-clip holds it in place. Thanks for your replies. Maybe this can help someone who is replacing inner axle seal on 1988-1993 S-10. Thanks again

Rwalker,
Thanks for following up with your solution. Corrosion over the years cause issues. Glad to know nothing was broken. Hopefully you'll get several more years of use! If you like, send me a picture of your truck. I'll post the picture for you. It's nice to see first gen trucks on the road.
