SBC stock. After sitting for years the radiator appears to have white corrosion at the ends of the tubes inside the radiator. It does not seem to cause any problems but the temp goes to 210 but I think a 180 thermostat is in it. Not sure. Anyway is there a mild cleaner that won't distroy the heater core that might work. I've been told baking soda but I don't drive it much so I doubt it would work well. Thought I might just pull the rad and have it boiled out. Any suggestion?

You can try filling the radiator (off the vehicle) with white vinegar for about a week. If those deposits are lime from water, they will dissolve. The vinegar may also dissolve the other type of deposits.
You can also find an old-time radiator shop that will unsolder the end tanks and rod out the radiator. It used to be cheap to get that done, but I'd think today you'd pay more than the cost of a replacement radiator.
I would not spend more than the cost of the white vinegar. After that, I'd replace it.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |
