I've read online and this forum for some time. I learned to set the timing by placing the BB in the fly wheel window setting the distributor to #1 cylinder and the car fired up. I let it run until the engine was warm. I connected a timing light pointed it at the needle on the flywheel. The light was set on 0. I didn't see the BB. As I turned the dial on the timing light the BB appeared and lined up with the pointer at the 18 degree mark on the timing light. This is my first time using a timing light and working on a classic car. Please Advise

Engine must be at base idle and vacuum line on dist disconnected, to get an accurate setting.

I did disconnect the vacuum line and had a vacuum gauge on the carburetor. It was not in the green per the gauge. I installed a Bosch tachometer and idle was about 500rpm in park and drive. It has a new valve gasket, intake manifold gasket, new carburetor, spark plugs, wires and coil.

Ok, so what is the timing per the manual? 18 advanced is way to much. Online info
says on the ball, I would set it 4 degrees advanced, see how it runs.

the marks could be off. lots of test driving will help you zero in on where it shoud be. mark the inner and outer rings on the dampner so you will know in the future if they are moving around.

Ok after finishing my 36hr night shift finally back to the car. I finally have it timed at 7 degrees that seems to run the best. I just kept adjusting the distributor while watching the timing light and vacuum gauge. The Vacuum gauge reads right on the line of the green. Tachometer is about 600rpm.I went ahead a swapped out to a Pertronix ignition with Flame thrower coil instead of points. I've yet to drive it around will do that tomorrow as I'm beat! Thanks for all the help and I will update soon.
