I've read online and this forum for some time. I learned to set the timing by placing the BB in the fly wheel window setting the distributor to #1 cylinder and the car fired up. I let it run until the engine was warm. I connected a timing light pointed it at the needle on the flywheel. The light was set on 0. I didn't see the BB. As I turned the dial on the timing light the BB appeared and lined up with the pointer at the 18 degree mark on the timing light. This is my first time using a timing light and working on a classic car. Please Advise

Engine must be at base idle and vacuum line on dist disconnected, to get an accurate setting.

I did disconnect the vacuum line and had a vacuum gauge on the carburetor. It was not in the green per the gauge. I installed a Bosch tachometer and idle was about 500rpm in park and drive. It has a new valve gasket, intake manifold gasket, new carburetor, spark plugs, wires and coil.

Ok, so what is the timing per the manual? 18 advanced is way to much. Online info
says on the ball, I would set it 4 degrees advanced, see how it runs.

I use to use 1 of my dad's golf tee's to plug the vacuum line, Hope this helps.

This Old Codger, had to use a Rifle Scope to see the timing mark, on my 62-235.
