I've had my 88 k1500/v10 with a 350tbi for some time now. I went ahead and posted this in the 73-87 thread as I thought it might pertain better to these vehicles (move/delete if I'm wrong)

The rear end has always made a clunk noise when shifting gears from park/neutral/drive.
I've ignored it since it's an old beat up truck that I'm not familiar with and runs and drives fine.

It doesn't always do it, sometimes its a hard clunk other times a softer tink but it makes noises and it's progressively getting a little more noticeable.

Sometimes when I'm reversing I can hear some noises from the rear when I start to accelerate, likewise in drive when I'm turning sometimes, its kind of random.

A few weeks ago I played with my U joints, which don't seem to have any play. And I flushed and changed my diff fluid with some 80w-90 conventional and have no difference.

While the diff cover was off, my buddy took a video of what was going on inside the rear while I switched gears. He also took a video of me switching from park to reverse and what the driveshaft looks like when it does it.

I plan to keep running it, never any real issues apart from what I've mentioned. But It's not a good thing and wanted to know what you guys have to say or think is happening exactly.

Below is two links to the videos previously mentioned, thanks.

Typical G80 locking differential noise when they are going bad. Adding limited slip additive, then driving slowly in figure eights may help.

I’m not familiar with G80. Plenty of them don’t last.

Common Eaton based diff in GM trucks, had one in my 2003 TB, same basic symptoms. Don't think this one is repairable.

Forgot to get back to this thread after having read you guys' responses. You guys gave me a quick identification that I have a G80 that is pretty much junk, I'll run it till it runs no more.

May try some cheap additives.

Thank you for the responses.

I hear sawdust will quieten it down.

Has anyone replaced a G80 with a locker? Lockers are fairly easy to install.
