I have a 1964 Malibu convertible i am interested in buying. The owner says the engine is original to the car?? The numbers on the engine are: F0308GF, 3849852, B236. Can anybody tell me from these numbers if this is the original engine for the 1964. I am seeing that it's a 1966. Also, I believe it is a 283 motor. Thanks, GaryKid

GF - Many uses 1955-56 265 cid
GF - 1957, 1965-67 283 cid
Used in full size cars.
So the owner is incorrect as not listed used in Chevelle.

23rd day
year ending in a 6, 1956 for use in a 1957 or 1966 for use in a 1967

So if I understand correctly, The engine was built in 1966 and most likely used in 1967. There is no way that was the engine that came with the car in 1964.

1967 model year vehicle production year (typical) ran from August 1966 to July 1967.
An engine built in Feb (B) 1966 would in all probability go into a 1966 model year. Either way, the parts catalog says this engine was used in a full size pass car, not in a Chevelle.
Many owners think because its the same engine as would come in the car its an original engine.

Amazing how people with a 60 year old car will swear and insist that the engine is original when it is not.
These days, I believe NOTHING. You can buy cowl tags, VIN tags and even buy an aged build sheet. Go to any swap meet and you can buy an old sales order from a Chevrolet dealer from long ago.
Just like the 62 Chevrolet Bel Air bubble top that had an Impala cowl and VIN tag. NOT
