Got this 1968 Ranch Wagon running and stopping for a older
lady that has been a good customer for many years. She is not doing so well and her daughter wanted me to fix it up for her to take to our local parade in a few months.

I’m not a body or paint man at all so would appreciate all the help I can get.


What can I do to get the paint to look better, or is
It too far gone. Would just like it to look better.

I would appreciate product names and how to use them. If I need a polisher what kind to purchase? Is there a certain speed for a polisher? What kind of pads? Not wanting to spend a lot of money on one, thinking Harbor Freight?

I’m a complete novice at this so the more info the better for me!

That looks like old lacquer. Not sure what Ford used in that era, but it is a single stage paint system.

Keep in mind that to get a shine, you have to flatten the finish. That involves removing some material using a high speed buffer and some polishing compound. Don't be surprised if the paint is very thin and if you do try some polishing, go easy.

Another trick I saw used with some temporary success was to add one quart of kerosene to wash water and let the kerosene give some depth to the finish.

What polishing compound? Like buffing compound? Need a brand or something. What I know about this stuff you could put in a thimble and still have room for a pea!

I like 3M products in a black colored bottle. Use a very fine polishing finish to see how it goes. If you use something too aggressive, you'll cut right through that paint and into the primer, then you're screwed.

When I had the dealership and we brought a vehicle in for reconditioning, we didn't wash the vehicle before starting the polishing if the paint needed work. The airborne dust on the vehicle acted as a fine polishing material. We used the polishing material from 3M plus the dust that accumulated.

Be careful and don't try to be too aggressive.

Thanks!

I did the side and hood tonight. I used a 3/8 drill with some 4” buffer pads that the pretty lady bought me for Xmas in a car wash kit for my Vette. Worked well just slow. I’ll be buying me a buffer this weekend and finish it up next week. I have a square body that I’m selling so it’s going to get this treatment also.

Go to the Autogeek forum and search for Meguiars #7 soak. I've brought back many paint jobs using this process that I thought weer not salvageble.

1968 Caprice coupe, 327/275, TH400, Ash Gold/Ivy Gold, Tach Dash, Tilt, Buckets, Console, AM/FM, Rear Defog, Disc and Rallys.
1970 El Camino, 350, TH400, 12 bolt posi, a blank slate!
