I think my speedometer cable is broken or stuck. Speedometer does not move. Pulled cable from the cluster and rotated the wheels. Cable does not spin. I have not removed it from the trans. Looking for a new one but all I pull up is numerous different lengths. Does anyone know the proper length for a 69 small block 4sp car. also any dealers who might have a better price on this. Forgot. The car has been stored for a couple years inside a garage in So. Calif. Thank you

Those old mechanical cables started to disappear in the 1980s as manufacturers began using electronics to drive the speedometer.
I would think your choice of parts will be limited.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |

When I first read the posts on this topic, I was thinking oh great this may take a while to get a new speedo cable,
so I put the '56 up on blocks about 4 feet in the air just clearing the roof of the garage.
Thinking I needed a big container to catch all those drips of trans fluid seeing how it maybe years before I find a speedo cable.
Well low and behold......
Auto Zone has 'em by the millions,
as does Ecklers and Classic Industries.
Several other places has them also.
The one in my '56 was leaking so I was looking also, never ran into a "supply issue" seems everyone has those in stock.
I did find the price variance is quite a bit from place to place.
I recently ordered one from Ecklers and got it in the mail Saturday.
With the car nearly touching the ceiling it sure was easy to change out this cable.

Thanks for the info from everyone. I have assumed that a cable would be available at clasic ind and auto parts stores but I wanted to know the length of a stock cable so I don't come away with a generic cable that is a "one cable that fits all" and is too long and would look like crap. I guess I will just have to take mine out and measure it. The Camaro has little clearance under the dash and at my age 77 life is a little more difficult. Thanks again.

yeah nothing like a few extra yards of cable to wrap around the exhaust pipes, or drag the ground,
but then those old mechanical cables maybe limited,
if you get one, get one with the black plastic type wrap so you can always wonder what that burning smell is while out cruising like we always did back in the 80's.
one place has 61" and another has 73" and another varies other lengths
