After having the "hood louvers" for all 4 of their cars confiscated by Nascar prior to practice Friday, Hendrick put all 4 cars in the top 10 at Phoenix today, including Byron's second straight win. This is one of those "must use without mods" parts.
I've seen mixed previews of what happens next. Either a big penalty or a scolding of the supplier. I guess we'll know in a couple of days.

Well, how about a big penalty AND 4 race suspension of all 4 crew chiefs! I guess Nascar decided to get a backbone on this one.

Well the 4 race suspension for the crew chiefs was anticipated as part of the penalty since that's what happened last year to those that got penalized for modifying parts. Thing is though, the suspended crew chief can still communicate with his substitute and also look at data from the car in real time. All they really lose is the crew chief's judgment when a decision is needed immediately during the race, like making a call or switching a call on how many tires to take on a pit stop, etc.
According to Hendrick people, they and Nascar have been discussing the louvers for weeks and apparently the discussion has been inconsistent. So maybe there will be some relief when the appeal is heard. And we as the ignorant public don't know what they really did or didn't do to the louvers or even what was wrong with them except that they apparently don't fit the hood. Kind of like buying parts for your hot rod. Many of those don't fit, and you either modify them or send them back when they don't, but if it's a part you must have you have to figure out something. The flip side of the argument is did they make them fit AND make them a LOT better than ones that "kind of " fit ?
Apparently whatever they did wasn't huge because the Hendrick cars ran really well with them in the practice session and still ran really well with "legal" replacements in qualifying and the race.
The drama will continue until the appeal is heard.

The other curious thing is they nabbed the #31 car for one bad louver (apparently the other was OK). The 31 is a Kaulig car which is prepped by RCR not Hendrick, and RCR has many others which they prep - the #3 and #8, as well as the other Kaulig car and the Legacy cars.

Well the appeals board gave Hendrick a break, rescinding the points penalties but sticking with the fines and suspensions.
A form of "shortening the sentence for good behavior" I suppose.
