Hello Everyone.
My 84 Chevy C10 was sitting for a few months and I finally got around to running it. I took the battery out to charge it but when I came back with fresh battery, my 1-wire alternator lead wire was dead shorting like I was welding. I tested resistance on the unhooked alternator and it was good.
I left the alternator wire off and was able to install the battery. I tried start the vehicle but it wouldnt fire. I tested a plug and found I was barely getting spark. Voltage drop at the battery was around 1.5 volts while cranking. I noticed the distributor cap was pretty hot. I took the cap off and found a burned coil to the point where melted plastic came out.
I ordered new Delphi coil and module, I just hope there's not some underlying issue where I burn the coil again.
Any idea what was going on here?

Be sure the ground connection from the coil to the harness in the cap is installed correctly or this may happen again.

The ground strap was in place.
I got a new Delphi coil and module. It started right up. A few circuits aren't working but I'll troubleshoot them later. I'm afraid to hook the 1-wire alternator back up. I think I want to bench test my spare 3-wire alternator and put that back on.

Two weeks ago, I did to my 1986 GMC Safari V6/5 speed van, the last one of my vehicles to still have a CS alternator, a conversion to single wire 1 wire 12SI.
Works excellent, just like the rest of my 12 vehicles I have done same to previously.
The CS was a 20 year old NAPA quality rebuild, longest lived of them all.
It took something out inside, which would run OK, but drain the battery overnight. This van has a voltmeter in the dash, and showed lesser than normal charge.
Two weeks into this 12SI changeover, the van is running better than it ever has before, just like its 12 other family I did this conversion on.
In testing the CS alternator, all was well, noting showed up. I have rebuilt a bunch of CS alts, far, far more 12SI, and did ALL into single wire, with NO PROBLEMS.
So much for not using a single wire converted 12SI. BTW, the single wire 12's are not from the aftermarket, they were done when the car versions were, just had a different regulator inside for farm implement and industrial use, to do the BATT to side terminal connect inside the alt, no jumper or second wire, and easy to add a charge light, one added wire to terminal from light.

Can't speak for all 1-wire alternators, but Powermaster alternators do have a provision for the idiot light. You need to rewire the blue/white wires and the regulator multi-connector, or you can use this kit from American Autowire which does it for you.
