Hello Everyone.

My 84 Chevy C10 was sitting for a few months and I finally got around to running it. I took the battery out to charge it but when I came back with fresh battery, my 1-wire alternator lead wire was dead shorting like I was welding. I tested resistance on the unhooked alternator and it was good.

I left the alternator wire off and was able to install the battery. I tried start the vehicle but it wouldnt fire. I tested a plug and found I was barely getting spark. Voltage drop at the battery was around 1.5 volts while cranking. I noticed the distributor cap was pretty hot. I took the cap off and found a burned coil to the point where melted plastic came out.

I ordered new Delphi coil and module, I just hope there's not some underlying issue where I burn the coil again.

Any idea what was going on here?

Be sure the ground connection from the coil to the harness in the cap is installed correctly or this may happen again.

The ground strap was in place.

I got a new Delphi coil and module. It started right up. A few circuits aren't working but I'll troubleshoot them later. I'm afraid to hook the 1-wire alternator back up. I think I want to bench test my spare 3-wire alternator and put that back on.
