I have a question regarding a 2008 impala I bought not long ago. When the car is in 3rd or 4th gear, it will shift into another higher gear. But the car will still be in whatever gear it started in. But when I let off of the gas it shifts back “down”. Is this normal? The car has 101k miles on it and a 4 speed automatic transmission. It is a LS with the 3.5 liter v6. I am also new to cars. I’ve only drove trucks. All help is appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to CT. This is too complex for meaningful advice here. This should be scanned with a bi-directional scanner commonly used by a good trans shop. This procedure should pin down your issue.
