on my 2003 GMC 3500 4x4 6.0 engine I notice when plowing that my shift indicator doesn't go into #1 it just goes to #2 and stops at the travel limit. is this an indicator that the shift cable is going to break soon? it seems okay when shifting into reverse but I did notice if I put it in neutral and hit the throttle the truck seem to be slightly in Drive for a few seconds when driving it. stopped it seems fine.

The shift indicator is fed by a switch on the outside of the transmission. It can be adjusted slightly by loosening the two screws and rotating it a bit. That could solve the issue with the indicator being off. That would not cause it to be in drive briefly while in neutral though. The detents are inside the transmission.
