Parts manuals are not clear as to which throwout bearing is correct for V8's and 6 cylinder engines. The pressure plates are usually of the diaphragm spring type or the three finger style.
1. Which bearing is used (short or long) with all original 57 V8 parts and the new diaphragm type presure plate?
2 Is the three finger type pressure plate still available, and which bearing would be used for this application?
Thanks for your support, Chevi

The simple answer is:
If the 'fingers' on the pressure plate are the 'flat' type; the long throw out bearing is applicable.
If the 'fingers' are the 'long/bent' type the 'short' throw out bearing is needed.
In 55-57, I don't believe GM only used anything but the 'flat' type pressure plate, regardless of V8 or in-line 6 engines.
With aftermarket clutches, the same criteria apply. 'Flat' fingers = long bearing; 'long/bent' fingers = short bearing.
That criteria places the throw out bearing in the same location/position on the 'shaft'. This conserves the geometry of the the system.

The long/short throw out bearing situation has been giving me a problem for a long time. Thanks for clearing up the requirement for using a short bearing with Long/Bent fingers. Chevi

My comments would've been clearer if I had not double talked. I edited my comments to correct my mistake.
