Has anyone ever come up with a good way to add a lock the hood? Or possibly put an inside pull cable and delete the grill latch? I’m doing a few things to be able to make my 50 more secure for an upcoming trip. I tried searching but didn’t come up with anything
Thanks

Haven't done it to mine yet but plan too. Shouldn't be that difficult to adapt a pull cable from a donor vehicle at a junk yard. Just need to measure how long a cable you need.

I had a 49 deluxe coupe that had a coble release on the hood.

As eplantage points out, the early 1949 models did have a cable release. I'm not sure when they were discontinued, but I believe sometime during early production. I did notice that my '50 lock plate is the same as the '49 in that there is still a place for the cable mechanism to be attached. It would be relatively easy to fabricate a cable for it. The '51 lock plate is obviously different and there is no place for a cable attachment. The image below is from the 1949 Maintenance Supplement to the 1946-47-48 Shop Manual printed for General Motors of Canada, Oshawa, Ont., but the same image appears in the U.S. Shop Manual in smaller form along with the second scan in Section 11.

I mounted a cable hood release on my '54 Chevy pickup. I got it from NAPA, and it was a very heavy duty cable. I bought two at the time, and kept the spare for many years. I don't have any pictures of the '54's cable release, but years later I used the 2nd one as a fuel on/off for my diesel truck. I do have a picture of that set-up.
It was a very hard pull to pop the hood. If I were doing it again, I'd make some provision to get some leverage on the hood release so it wouldn't be such a hard pull.

Thanks for the reply’s. I never knew that 49 had it. I searched on “online auction site” and there’s one on there complete with cable and has some really good pics of what it looks like. Should be easy to fab something up for it.
Thanks for the info

I fabricated a wedge that slides in behind the hook arm, you can't see it and if people want your stuff bad enough they will just get in the car and pull the latch. If you go to my posts and look up 'hood lock update' I have pics.

I always locked my truck's doors, even if just at the supermarket for a few minutes. And they'd have to figure out that I had a pull wire, break in, and pull it, and like I say it was a BEAR to pull. Anyway, no one ever tried in the 9 years it was my daily driver.

On that 49 I had, sometimes the little thing at the end of the cable would slip and I couldn't pull it open with the cable, I'd have to reach inside the grill and push the lever to open the hood. They aren't as theft proof as one might think.

I cut my lever off so no one (including me) could open the hood by pulling the lever.
