I have a Hurst 4 speed which needs to have the backup switch harness installed. I have the Hurst switch and bracket which attaches to the shifter mechanism and the wiring harnesses from AAW. I understand there is a spot on the firewall that will need to be opened for the harness grommet. Does anyone have a good picture of where that hole is located? Also where does the dash side harness get connected? Thanks

Not sure about your setup but in my car the switch is inside the console inside the cab & attached to the shifter mechanism. The fused power wire to the switch is from a switched ignition source in the fuse box, it's also earthed & connected to the reverse lights.
Not sure why you would need a grommet through the firewall unless the reverse switch connects to the trans outside the cabin. If it does, I would try & run the wiring through the hole in the floor for the trans.

Here is a picture of a '65 Impala with the manual trans reverse lamp switch harness still secured to the firewall. Page 335 of the 1965 assembly manual shows more more detail. The drawing calls out a .92 diameter hole to be drilled at an existing dimple in the firewall. If you have problems finding the dimple, I can measure the car to see where is should be located. Its exact location shouldnt be fussy. Tim

Perfect, thanks. Now all I need is how it's run and connected under the dash side.

Interesting. Your pic shows the firewall connection above the Speedo cable grommet, while timmygs65 photo shows it below the cable grommet. I checked my firewall and saw there are dimples in both locations. I wonder if it's model year or options dependant?

One of the photos has power brakes and the other does not. Maybe that drove a difference in location?
If it was an instruction given to the assembly plant and there wasn't any error proofing maybe it varied by plant or the person on the line?

Mine came with manual brakes, I added the power. Maybe a 65 to 66 difference?

Based on the 65 assembly manual on page 335 (66 manual shows the same drawing) I cant say which dimple is being called out. However there is a NOTE to the installer that they should remove the firewall insulation mat at perforation where the reverse lamp harness is supposed to route through. Perhaps that location in the mat would clue us in to which dimple was intended for the harness. I dont have the M20 installed in the car to tell if my wiring harness from the transmission is long enough to reach that upper dimple location . Tim

Found the knockout on the firewall insulation pad and the dimple was right behind it. It was in the same location as the photo from timmyg65. I drilled the appropriated hole through the firewall and installed the dash side harness. Photo attached

That is good news . For once the assembly manual was helpful. I found out that my harness was routed between the fire wall and insulation mat ;up and over the top of the mat. And the insulation mat knock out was still in tact. What method did you use to make your harness grommet hole? Tim

Used my battery powered drill and bit from inside the car. Removed the column plate and accel pedal. Flattened the dimple with a punch and drill it out. Came out clean. A little WD40 on the plug and in she went, snug.
