2009 Chevy 2500 SB CC, 6.0 Automatic 4wd.
When going downhill on snow or ice in 4wd, or when slowing down on snow or ice, using the brakes, I get a clunk in the front end somewhere that feels like it has really quickly come out of 4wd and right back in. I don't even know where to begin looking for this problem. It doesn't do it on dirt or pavement, just on slippery surfaces in 4wd only. Any ideas? Or where to start diagnosing this?

Given the age of the truck, I'd start with the suspension system.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |

ABS
Sounds exactly like anti-lock brake system (ABS) being applied to a skidding wheel(s). A warning light may flash when that happens. That's normal, as the ABS applies brake to the slipping wheel(s) it will pulse (brake on/off) it to prevent lockup and that will make a noise like you describe. Its trying to get control of the vehicle braking to keep you from sliding through a intersection.
You could be noticing it more because;
A) one or more front tire(s) are low on air pressure
B) they need replacing or are inferior winter tires
C) you are driving too fast for the conditions
D) unavoidable given road conditions
PS - I drive on winter roads from Nov to Apr so I have heard those noises 100's of times.
