Recently watched a vid highlighting a 1970 LS6. One issue mentioned was water pumps and associated drive belts. Question for original owners of the LS6 engine option is were water pumps and belts an issue or just a problem fluke

I had one in 2007 that I bought out of Florida when I was in Alabama. It was the real deal.

Never had any belts fly off but with high enough RPM I have no doubt that centrifugal force could toss the belt.

People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know.

That is BS. Also there is no such thing as an LS6 water pump. All passenger cars used the same water pump, except the Corvette. The LS6 and L78 did use deep groove pullys.

I believe that the story that goes along with the LS6 is that with high RPMs you can toss the drive belts.

I have heard this before, but when I had mine there were zero issues. Yes, the water pumps are shared along with other Chevrolet engines, but the only thing that I could recall was the story about tossing drive belts.

Deep groove pullies were a carryover from earlier days when the alternators/generators were located on the drivers side and the unsupported belt spans were quite long. Personally have never thrown a belt on a '69 up BBC with the later closely placed alternators with standard factory pullies or deep groove pullies. That is for properly aligned pullies. Misaligned pullies certainly can cause a belt to be thrown.
