A couple simple issues brought this entire project to a halt for a week while I surfed the web looking for solutions.

Attachment: s-l1600.jpg (241.8 KB) 10 View(s)

First the cylinder heads that came with this engine needed to be rebuilt and the quote came back from the machine shop at $2000.00 if the castings checked out OK for all new valves, springs and hardened seats. Not wanting to spend that much on those castings I set out to find some 3884520 “power pack” castings and was fortunate to find a set already rebuilt with new 1.940 intake valves, 1.5 exhaust valves, shot blasted, hot tanked & magnafluxed, hardened exhaust seat installed, guides machined with Viton valve seals for less than I could rebuild the other set.

Thank you @RCR3 it is a Toyota Cavalry blue, I got a couple pint cans of sample colors and it’s what I grabbed when it was time to paint the engine. I’m trying to find an accent color I like for valve covers and air cleaner now.
I have these colors in my shopping cart now.

Nows the time to fabricate a removable trans crossmember. Otherwise to get it out, you have pull the engine with it, huge pita. Nice work, quite a project for sure.

Thank you Shepherd it's nice to know I have people looking at my pictures and bringing possible issues to my attention, I'm a one man show out here doing what I can but I’m bound to overlook something.
With the X frame there really isn’t a transmission cross member as the tail shaft is right in the fork of the X so I made a mount that bolts in. I’ll try to remember to get some picture to show you to see what you think.

Ok, but can you drop the trans out and down? that is the problem with these chassies.

Thank you guys, most days my dog and I are the only ones looking at this junk wondering if we are making good decisions. I know when he gives me that look I need to snap a picture and see what you guys think.

Shepherd, this is the transmission mount and I believe the transmission will drop out the bottom. This car has a turbo 400 and everything is tight and that center section of X frame is the lowest point so I needed my mount to bolt from the top or risk grinding the bold heads off. You can see the extra ½” spacer on top that I had to add to keep my drive shaft angle correct after I finally found an oil pan that was in stock and raised the engine ½” to make it work.

Getting closer on this engine, I’m making this way harder than I need to be. I decided I wanted all new hardware for the engine and they needed to be hex flange bolts and that added a week then I need needed to prep them for coating. Air cure Cerakote GRAPHITE BLACK C-102 for the stuff I didn’t want to put in the oven like the coil and distributor and heat cure Cerakote GRAPHITE BLACK H-146 for everything else. The headers and pipes are coated in Cerakote GLACIER BLACK C-7600, this coating is amazing it will withstand temperatures up to 1,800° Fahrenheit and thermal shock from those temperatures directly into water with no adverse effects, I’ve used it on everything from suppressors to turbo housings and it seems indestructible. Hoping the Cerakote for the valve covers and air cleaner gats here today

Not a lot of photo opportunities lately just a lot of little rust repair and welding holes that won't be used, I did find a local guy to give me a hand on the body and paint work to get back in track. I hope to be driving this summer.

I'm leaning towards blue and ivory; as soon as I get this transmission back together I should be done with the major mechanical work and I can start focusing on undercoating the underside of the body and getting it painted body color.
