I'm building a hot rod (Model A with a 283 SBC) and a few years ago, I picked up a pair of aftermarket '41-'48 Chevy tail lights. I started making holes in the back side of my body and I noticed that one of the studs on the lights was on the horizontal center line and that the other one was above (or was it below) the centerline of the light. Then, as I got further into it, I found out that there's a small key on the top of the lens and a corresponding notch in the rim of the main stamping. Actually there are two notches, the wide one for the key and a smaller one for a drain? Anyway, big notch at the top, small notch at the bottom. Today, I found out that the stamped housings I have are different from each other!!! If the mounting holes are the same, one of the lights will be right side up and the other upside down! Which one of the two versions is correct? Is the large notch up when the off center stud is hIgh or when the large notch is down??? Thanks for any help here!

The housings should be marked (R)ight and (L)eft. So if you put them on the proper side with the R & L right side up, they should be installed correctly. The tab on the lens that fits in the key in the housing should be on the top.

Where should the R and L markings be? Are they stamped in or are the painted? Does anybody have pictures?
Thanks!
