Replaced the alternator, voltage regulator, and condenser on my ‘65 Impala SS. The voltage regulator is an OEM from Classic Industries. The voltage regulator buzzes at idle, any ideas why this is happening? I thought it might be a ground issue, so I replaced the voltage regulator ground wire with an OEM ground wire, but it still has a loud buzz.

Here's one for your car so long as you don't have the big alternator.

I'm running Lectric Limited's Breakerless SE ignition, it works great, they make nice products.
What did you buy from Classic Industries, the OER one?

That's the one for the big alternator by the standards of back in the day.
I should have asked you what you got for the new alternator you mentioned.
A conversion harness is required to hook up an internally regulated alternator so you must have bought a period correct one for your external regulator?

Regarding Classic Industries, please read their Google Reviews.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |

With the car idling and the regulator buzzing, try using a length of wire touching the negative battery post and a mounting bolt of the regulator and see if it goes quiet
If it's still buzzing then grounds are good so the regulator is a lemon

Get a Wells VR715, solid state, no problems and can put the Delco cover on it.

I have a few questions about the Wells VR715. Is the installation the same as an original voltage regulator?(w/condenser? ground wire?) Does it use the same 4 wire plug or do any upgrades need to be made? Is it just a plug and play upgrade? I searched for instructional YouTube videos, but was unable to find anything. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

I had a "solid state" regulator on my car. Gried 3 batteries and there was a draw that got so bad i had to disconnect battery when parking the car for any length of time like at work or overnight. Changed alternator out 3 times. Finally changed out regulator to a low mileage used mechanical regulator and now everything works as it should. Even the gen light works and it hasn't worked in years.
