Has anyone used them? My relatively stock 350 Chevy powered 1930 DeSoto had Magaflows on it when I bought it...very loud. I replaced them with Walker turbo mufflers but it's still too loud. I considered stock mufflers but a shop suggested resonators mounted before the turbo mufflers. I know nothing about them. Will they reduce exhaust noise? What can I expect in the area of noise reduction? I don't mind a light rumble but I don't want to alarm the neighbors every time I fire up the beast!

I have a 62 Impala with 300 hp 327. My 300 hp car is louder than my 250 hp 63 was. The 300 hp cars have a larger 2 1/2 in inlet muffler. The replacement mufflers for these cars seem louder the OEM GM mufflers, which are no longer made. I installed Show Cars resonators which are strait thru and are mounted in the stock (behind the mufflers) locations. The resonators have helped reduce the cruising rumble, but not completely eliminated it.

The shop I'm working with is suggesting I put the resonators in front of the mufflers. Wondering if that will matter.

any kind of resonator or muffler will help. the bigger the better. anything before the muffs will run hot. glasspacked anything normaly blows out the glass. i would put them wherever they fit.

Thanks. There is more room in front than behind so I'm guessing that's the reason. These are turbo mufflers but I'm running headers so that's probably contributing to the loudness too.

I have them (walker turbos) on my '53 Chevy Sport Coupe and it has a mildly hopped up Blueprint 350. They are not nearly as loud as they are on the DeSoto for some reason. Go figure...

A while back I responded to a thread where I cited the location of the mufflers in the exhaust stream and the difference in sound/note that doing so made. I found an excellent article on another site that discussed that same issue.

You mostly see the resonator at the end of the exhaust stream. You can also try moving the mufflers to the rear area of the vehicle. I have also seen where some systems use a balance pipe between the pipes where they come close together. That balances sound as well.



People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know.

yes the further away from the engine the more effective the mufflers. caddys had 4 mufflers 2 behind the rear end and those cars were quiet. lots of import cars back in the day had resonators before the muffflers.

The DeSoto is pretty compact and there is no room at the end of the exhaust system for a muffler or a resonator because of the gas tank location. The best place in terms of space for them is in the middle of the car.

Wouldn't new quieter mufflers (the same size as what you have now) be easier/cheaper than adding resonators and new exhaust pipes? Basically a simple muffler swap?

That's what I suggested to the shop but they said the resonators may be a better way to go...and, I do want to hear a little engine noise just to drown out the electric fuel pump!

Better for them. They get to make more $. And, what if the resonators do not do what you want them to do?

Me? I'd turn the volume up on the radio if the fuel pump noise bothered me. :laugh :

1.) replace the entire exhaust and try another system

2.) replace mufflers and try another brand/style

3.) add some type of resonator

4.) add some type of balance pipe

5.) live with the current system

The choice is yours.

A lesson learned the hard way is not easily forgoten.

You're right of course. Already replaced the mufflers and the tailpipes twice. Don't want to get rid of the headers or add a balance pipe. Had one of those before and I didn't like the exhaust sound. My question here was about resonators and what effect they might have on exhaust sound. I guess the resonators are my last resort unless I add a radio.

An alternative to a radio is a portable, battery charged (from any A/C outlet or USB) blue tooth speaker; playing your own personal tunes from your phone. No car changes, no wires, no radio 'talk'.

There are MANY choices. Some have volume control, some 'charges' last 8 hours, or more. They are also great for playing tunes while working on the car while not running down the car battery.

The one I have is about the size of a 16 oz beer can. I 'mount' it 'in' a a plastic cup holder mounted from the ash tray of my '63. It has it's own volume control 'buttons' and an 'on/off' button; easily reached by the driver. Lock it in the trunk when parked.

Take it anywhere.

Just a suggestion.

Haven't heard it personally yet, but the shop tells me the resonators reduced exhaust noise about 25% according to their estimate. I don't know if that will be enough. I was hoping for 50-75%.

Pete, thanks for the suggestion on the portable speaker but then I'd have to have a cell phone and then I'd have to record some tunes, etc, etc, etc. I think that's bit over my head...technologically speaking. I still have a land line!

Sorry, your muffler shop is full of it.

A resonator is NOT a muffler, it is a frequency distortion device to remove the distortion.

Frequency distortions in exhaust systems are sound events, but not like radio RF distortions. They are actually physical waves in the exhaust system, and can be smoothed out, that is what a resonator does, NOT quiet exhaust noises.
