I need to remove the heads on a generation 1 350. Is there a sequence for removal?

I always went clockwise outside to inside.
Though I am not sure there is a sequence for removal.

There is a sequence for installation tightening. as far as taking them off, whatever you feel like.

The sequence for installation is to make sure there is equal clamping forces to ensure a good seal around each cylinder. So there is no specific sequence for removal.

Reverse order to torque. You want to make sure that you are not loading the force on a single bolt.
Loosen each 1/4 turn, then another 1/4, etc. then when the clamping force is relieved, just pull them all out.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |

Mel,
If 'tony1963'/Mercedes/'Tony 1963' would follow the guidelines he posted in response to your post, he would have NOTHING to say.
Virtually ALL his comments are useless information at best. Too many are simply inaccurate/BS. Been going on since about 2009.
What an ignorant stooge.

i never have. installation must use the pattern and more important, use 3 stages. need to check the head bolts to be sure where the head of the bolt seats there is enough meat to seat on to. you may need new head bolts with bigger contact area.

Well Tony1963 you are suggesting more meaningful replies on my part. You maybe correct and since the op may not have much engine tear down experience and his question had already been answered I could have taken a different path.
I could have stated most heads are held down by bolts but sometimes studs and nuts are used.
And sometimes you find their nuts are tighten down way too tight. Melvin the Meaningful.

With 17 head bolts on each side, turning each 1/4 turn until the clamping force is removed would likely take 3 or 4 passes around. If you consider 6 seconds for each bolt's 1/4 turn, that's a total of not more than 7 minutes per side to remove the clamping force. Then remove the bolts.
So, for both sides, we are talking a procedure that calls for 14 minutes in total. Call it 20 minutes if you like.
And I am being asked about being paid by the hour?
