anyone know the ins and outs of removing the steering gearbox. Any tips would be appreciated.

Its not a huge project. Access is the main pain, but removing the wheel well skirt sheet metal makes it easier.
once thats done, under the car work is necessary.
unbolt the pittman arm and use a puller to detach it first.
The shaft is held by a bolt after you unbolt or at least loosen the box from the frame first.
The box should readily pull away from the shaft, it will fall down, its heavy, so be prepared.
The old Chevy manual is a good place to start, its free to download
