I want to replace my holly 600 Economaster Carb.
Truck is a stock 283 with Edlebrock manifold. What's a reasonably priced replacement 4 barrel that works with with the new gas?

You can find a 4GC of that era if you are running the original manifold.
As far as "new gas", a rebuild kit will take care of that.

I replaced mine on my 283 after talking to the "old guy" at Holley - I ended up replacing my Economaster with a Holley 1850C (found it locally - NOS).
It works GREAT! No loss in MPG under normal driving conditions, AND it has GREAT power when I need it!
So, now I have 4 or 5 Economasters - 1 (I think) is NOS, plus a NOS rebuild kit somewhere...
If I would have known that the 1850 Holley would give me the same economy AND power when I need it (the Economaster is anemic), I would have gone with it LONG ago...

Keep in mind that a carburetor does one main job and that is to mix fuel with air as the air velocity rushes through the bore(s) of the carburetor.
Putting on a larger carburetor than the engine needs inhibits performance since it will not properly atomize the fuel.
The amount of air that goes into the engine is a function of RPM, valve lift and runner sizes. No matter how big the carburetor, or how many you have, the runner going to the valve is a certain size. If I attach a 4-inch pipe to the end of a garden hose, it does not flow more water.
Many retirement plans, executive bonuses and holiday parties have been financed out of the pockets of people who buy the latest/greatest carburetor, spend days trying to adjust it and then come back and proclaim that it doubled their MPG and tripled their horsepower.
The factory carburetor is the way to go, within a narrow band of tuning.
Doug Roe's book about carburetors really taught me that you need to stick with what the factory designed and use the adjustments that are already there.

Not sure I understand your response to my post.
The Holley tech support guy took down all of my info (engine size, intake manifold, cam info, tire size, transmission & rear end info, etc.), and calculated what I should go with, and HE WAS RIGHT!

Yeah, I have to believe that if the carburetor were not on top of the engine, there would be no aftermarket parts since it would not be easy to change.
Fortunes have been made by those that market a magic carburetor that makes more horsepower. Makes me laugh.
Behind all of this nonsense is a private equity fund that is making a fortune by Bob and Elmer spending their paycheck on these parts.
The factory unit is how to roll.

I am fine with those who want---as from the factory. Twice at Pomona I saw this guy who was going through boxes of OLD Chev items. Months later I saw him again siting on the ground going through old battered cardboard boxes. In my mind I had him looking for a one year only 1947 cig.lighter. I thought how great it would be to be standing there when he found one.
I am TOTALY AGAINST the COOKIE CUTTER thinking that your belief is the only way. So they don't get 50mpg from the new twister air cleaner who dies from that decision?
This is to me a hobby that should NOT have a lot of fences around it and very very very few---thou shall not do different than I.

Because I let it sit for 21 years and the dissimilar metals welded together. totally frozen together. I did find a matching replacement on line but I don't think it's working properly.

Thanks for all the replies. I have ignored this forum until I got back into getting this truck running for a daily driver. I'm have the Powergluide rebuilt and will be driving it again soon. I'm trying to keep it as stock as I can. I would love to put a Rochester 4 Bbl on there but I wonder how to get one that's tuned to my stock 283.

I just bought a cheap Chinesium Rochester knockoff, from those jungle people. My Friend just bought an Edelbrock, at AZ. We were comparing the Two- they both, have every appearance of having been cast, machined, and assembled by the same Little Chinese Girl. The Tishamingo works all the way, no problems. Over $220 Price difference.

Edlebrock 1400 series is a nice carb. It has vacuum secondaries (and small primaries) and a max of 600 cam. But it will only 'draw' what the engine needs.
The 1405 has no choke, 1406 has electric choke.
Just a suggestion.
