as many of you know I recently moved to Texas , and after 21 plus years of having a brinks home security system,
at my florida address,
and paying every month, about 3 years ago my wife called to cancel the monitoring service,
the gal that answered said they would lower the monthly bill about $20 a month,
if we would keep the discounted service price because we were senior citizens,
there was zero mention of any extended commitment or contract as we had the service for almost 20 plus years already.
my wife agreed and at that time asked if there was any commitment or contracts.
she was assured there was just a reduction in the monthly fees.
I called in early march to discontinue the security monitoring service ,
as we had the house on the market for sale.
and I was told that it was canceled, Today ,
its may 3 2022, almost two months later.. and I noticed I'm getting billed, so I call ,
and I get told I have 4 month remaining on my commitment ,
I said that can't be correct I had the service for 22 years plus and I was told ,
they AUTOMATICALLY re-new the commitment every 36 months,
and I still have 4 months remaining on my latest commitment!
I never signed anything, I never agreed to this.
obviously this is a total SCAM!!!
anyone that signs with brinks is getting SCAMMED !!

I'd check with the Fla authorities or state laws regarding auto-renewals. In NY auto-renewal is not enforceable unless specific requirements are met, especially with regard to consumer consent and notifications.
Also, as a point of interest....I routinely (every few months) get a solicitation from AARP to join or renew my membership even though its a 5 year membership and I have a few years left. I wonder how many seniors with somewhat less than reliable memories have paid to renew or now have 2 or 3 memberships because of this?

Wow! Thanks for the info. They bought out my old security system company. I'm going away from them too. I better call and ask. Plus, $5 for a paper bill! WTH?

A similar thing happened with my mother. She's was a long time subscriber to Reader's Digest. When I moved her closer to me in 2017 and changed her mailing address to mine, I noticed that her subscription was good until 2025 (she passed away in 2020).
RD routinely sends out subscription extension notices. I think Mom thought these were bills and kept sending them checks.
Luckily, the re-ups were typically only ~$20/two years, IIRC.

That's why I absolutely refuse to authorize any company to auto withdraw from my account. They only get my money if I send it to them. In this case, I would have just quit paying them.
