Engine running- I pull out the headlight switch and Amp guage needle goes to deficit. Increasing RPM's does not seem to help. I have had the Generator and Regulator checked out at a shop and they tell me they are fine. After this I tried a new regulator and the problem continues. Battery is new. Bad ground? Something in the headlight switch? :sad :

Are you running original sealed beams or did you update to halogens?

Eng on, fast idle what does the amp meter show? If you step on the brake and the brake lights come on what does the meter do with the eng on and high idle? How many volts is your set up putting out?

before you even try to start the car,get out your multi meter, your battery should read a bit more than 12 volts, once the engines at idle it should increase voltage and once your running at over about 1200 rpm you certainly should see a minimum of 14 volts from alternator.
obviously clean the battery cable contacts and electrical terminals and grounds,

then Id bsure verify the voltage and amps provided at idle, and in all likely hood you'll need a new battery and / or generator

is this a new problem or did you inherit it. my gut feeling is a wiring problem.

Seems to stay at 12 even when increasing the idle speed..... I hear it should go to around 13....perhaps that is all the generator is capable of producing?

If my memory serves me right ? When I had my 62 corvette the manual said it should charge at 13.5 volts. Should be able to have it checked at a starter alternator shop.

Remember,I'm not always right. But I'M never WRONG !

I am NOT GOOD with electrical so I don't leave one lily pad until it is 100% right. I almost always start with the battery posts, record voltage. Next compare a post to it's cable. Any loss of voltage calls for reason of loss and correcting such dirty, too small of cable, loose etc. Are all connections snug?
I AM NOT TALKING ANYONE DOWN BECAUSE THIS IS JUST MY WAY OF NOT MISSING OR GLOSSING OVER THE REAL PROBLEM.
Are you using a multimeter as a place that uses--fine-- instead of measures such as 12.5, 13.4 tells me nothing.
I would leave engine off and high beams on for 20 minutes. What does battery voltage show & record what it shows at end of that twenty both with and with the lights off. Start eng with the lights on
and Meter hooked up. With both the drain from lights and the reduced reserve in the battery there should be a call for max voltage from the system. Use 1,2 --1,500 revs. Do headlights on a wall go lower or brighter with up and down on gas?

I went to a different shop with the generator and voltage regulator. It turns out generator was shot. Managed to locate what was needed locally, i installed it all and everything is working fine. The first place I went to checked it out and told me nothing was wrong..... hmmmmm...... thankyou for the help and advice!
